What you need to find the success that is right there within your grasp is to have someone take you by the hand and show you what to do. To help you implement a system, guide you every step of the way, answer your questions, brainstorm (mastermind) with you and hold you accountable.

This person should be someone who is successfully doing what you want to do. Someone you pay. Someone who is at least one step ahead of you. Someone who has proven, documented results from his/her coaching members.

Why are these three criteria so important?  Let's look at each one in turn:

1.  You should find someone successfully doing what you want to do.

Sure, you can be coached by someone who got their coaching license and hung out a shingle, but never successfully built a business of their own.  There's plenty of them out there.  But one of the greatest benefits of working directly with a mentor is having the benefit of learning from their mistakes.

You want to be mentored by someone who has been where you want to go because they will help you to leapfrog over the years of failures they've already experienced.

There's no way around it - one way or another, mistakes must be made.  It's the only way to learn.  But, they don't have to be your mistakes.

When you find someone to mentor you who is successfully doing what you want to do, you get the benefit of their years of expensive errors.

2. Find a mentor who has done what you want to do and been successful at it.

3. You must find a mentor who is at least one step ahead of you.

Peer mentoring (what Alexis and her friends tried to do) is a good idea in theory, but there are many reasons it just doesn't work.

You need someone who has done what you want to do and your peers often haven't been there, done that.

You need someone who has not only made the mistakes you are facing, but is thinking bigger about the possibilities.  Your peers are right where you are, stuck in the same problems and limitations.

Someone at least one step ahead of you naturally has a bigger vision of what's possible. 

4. Find a mentor who has proven, documented results in the form of success stories of prior clients that can be verified. Everything else is just talk. Having coaching "credentials" is a joke if there are no results. Did the coach you're considering help his students make money?
