I don’t know about you but I was riveted to the television until 3:30 a.m. watching the election last night.
There are many lessons we can apply to our businesses from the huge upset.
First: Doing what everyone else is doing is not going to get the results you desire and definitely not a breakthrough. Most business owners follow a monkey-see, monkey-do approach with their marketing. Whatever other folks in their industry are doing, they do as well. One of the most annoying things I hear is, “We don’t do it that way in my industry.” Your road to victory includes breaking industry norms.
Second: Have a strong message and beat the drum about it constantly. You’re probably sick and tired of hearing that you need a Unique Selling Proposition. Yeah, I know it’s marketing 101 but let me ask you, do you have a powerful USP? Do you use it everywhere? Is your USP client centered? Without a powerful message, your road to success is going to be bumpy.
Third: Never, ever give up. Don’t listen to the naysayers. Keep fighting. Believe in yourself. Seek good counsel but then do what you think is right. A big mistake I see people make is turning over their decision making to so-called “experts.”
I remember having a private consultation with a famous “guru.” He was adamant that I should go in one direction. My gut told me he was mistaken and that I should go in the other direction. I didn’t listen to gut because, hey, the guru must be right. He wasn’t.
The buck stops with you. Do what you believe is right. Do it your way.
