Is all this metaphysical success stuff B.S.?

I'm back in Atlanta after my whirlwind tour of the U.S.

Today, I was interviewed by real estate guru Rachel Young. (Rachel is one of my featured speakers at my boot camp. If you haven't registered, do so now by going to http://www.davedee.com/bootcamp) During the interview, I had a revelation that I wanted to share with you.

A lot of motivational speakers talk about the "Law Of Attraction" and how the universe will deliver to you what you want as long as you ardently desire it. This is a warm, fuzzy mysterious sounding concept. It's nice to believe that you can just "think and grow rich." Unfortunately, if you just think about about being successful, eventually they will take your house away.

I do NOT completely buy into the law of attraction or any of the other metaphysical success stuff. In fact, I think most of it is hooey. But here is my revelation:

The purpose of affirmations, visualizations, and working on all the mental aspect of success is NOT because some mystical universal energy is going to help you succeed. It's because if your mindset is not correct, if you don't BELIEVE that you can achieve what you desire, you will not take the necessary ACTIONS to make it happen. All the mental stuff is designed so you will take the actions necessary to achieve what you want.

You attract what you want by the actions you take NOT because of what you think. BUT your mindset needs to be right in order for you to take those actions.

Of course, my very logical theory is not as "sexy" or "mysterious" as "visualize what you want and universal intelligence will plop it into your lap" but it is very practical.

I'm very interested in your thoughts. Post 'em to the blog.

Kick butt, make mucho dee-nero!

Dave,

I have to say, I think you are RIGHT about what you said. The Law of attraction isn't what it is "Marketed" to be. Even James Ray says if you just sit and meditate all day they will come and take your furniture. Plenty of good success biographies prove it.

Funny this should come in my email this afternoon. I was just following an email string from earlier that lead me through several sites of "The Secret" reincarnations and a spin off called "Abraham".

I have read the book, as well as most of the preceding theory books mentioned in "The Secret". ALL come down to the same principle. IF you have enough emotion and passion for something THEN, you will do what it takes to get to it.

Focus is the plan, desire is the application.

Hey Dave,

I myself believe in all that metaphysical success stuff. I have been teaching it for years and found myself making an increased income due to it. Do I sit around and wait? Heck no! But do people call me out of the blue to work with them absolutely!

I teach people how to manifest for themselves, heal for themselves and make money for themselves. The thing that metaphysical does for them is bring clarity, as what I found out is that once you have the clarity, energy and focus in line what ever that is comes to you.

Let me give you an example. I went to a seminar the other day and everyone wrote what they intended to experience in life. One of the ladies wrote her intent down and the speaker called on her to come up to the front he didn't know why he just was drawn too. Well she taught us about energy for about 15 minutes. Then she read her intent out loud which was "I will be a successful speaker talking in front of 100's of people. Well there were 100's and she taught us. Was that just a coincidence? Or did she manifest it? My answer is it really doesn't matter! What matters is she was clear and knew what she wanted.

Hi Dave,

When it comes to material and financial success, there is some validity in what you say. (Although Joe Vitale with Dr Hew Len and even Quantum Physicists such as Edgar Mitchell would disagree with you.)

However, when it comes to Mental and Emotional success, you couldn't be more off-target. The conscious mind DOES make the decision as to WHAT to change but it does not and cannot EFFECT the change itself i.e. action is most definitely not the key in this arena.

Mark

I really don't understand how people can believe all they have to do is think positively / attract stuff with pure desire. Haven't they ever played an instrument or sports? You don't learn to pitch a baseball by wanting to be the best pitcher in the world; you pitch by getting out there with your glove and pitching!

I'm a violinist, and I got good through *practice,* not fantasizing. I do a lot of 'mental rehearsal' which helps my understanding and interpretation of the music, but I still have to get out the old axe and saw away if I want to improve physically.

That being said, I do know that the desire to be a violinist has to come before the practice. I have taught plenty of students who definitely did NOT have the desire and were just going along with their parents' wishes!

I agree with Dave, you have to have the correct mindset in order to achieve success. I find that affirmations have become very helpful to me lately as my work environment has become negative, it helps me focus on taking action to change my life.

Dave, your email was a welcome surprise. I'm shocked at how many people are spewing this "ask and you shall receive" theory. I agree with you and the others commenting that positive thinking is a very good thing, but being successful takes more than thought. My success comes from hard work, persistence and by the goodness of God. It's pompous to think that we have complete control over our lives.
