Yesterday was my birthday and to “celebrate” the wife put me on a torture device. Let me ‘splain.
She recently convinced me to join the gym. I love yoga and practice it daily but wanted some intense cardio added to my excellent yoga regimen.
Anyway, Karen brings me over to the stair climber. It looks simple enough. You slowly walk up moving stairs. How hard could that be?
I climb up, hit the start button and start walking. Within 7 minutes my thighs are burning, my heart rate is already in my cardio zone, and I’m sweating. At the nine-minute mark, I wanted to quit. My legs are begging me to stop, but then I remember something I learned from power yoga guru, Brian Kest:
“You can be uncomfortable but not be so reactive to it.”
Words of wisdom, Lloyd. Words of wisdom.
So I push on, and a fantastic thing happens at the 11-minute mark: My legs stop burning. Yes, they were tired, and yes, I was huffing and puffing, but the actual pain had dissipated. I finished the workout and was tired but feeling good because I pushed through and preserved.
It’s the same in the business of one-to-many selling, kemosabe. Doing webinars, getting on stage speaking, writing emails and all the other forms of group selling, can be painful at first. You will probably fall flat on your face. I sure as hell did, many times. (Of course, I was not as fortunate as you, young one, to have me as my mentor.) But here’s the dealio:
If you work past that initial “pain,” it gets easier. You get stronger. You become a person of influence and power who can create huge paydays on demand and positively impact people on a mass scale that is just impossible with one-to-one selling.
